Abstract:
Optical microscopy is an essential tool in the life sciences and beyond. Innovations in methods and technology have opened new possibilities for studying the organization and dynamics of biological systems at the nanoscale with unprecedented temporal and spatial resolution. In this seminar, you will learn about challenges at the frontier of imaging and how to solve them using concepts from data analysis. Applications include interferometric scattering microscopy (iSCAT), a universal approach with the potential to visualize dynamics at exceptionally high speed, and cryogenic localization in three dimensions (COLD), which achieves sub-molecular spatial resolution of fluorescent labels. Their reasonably simple implementation is met with many subtleties for achieving optimal performance, some of which will be highlighted. Recent showcases from our lab demonstrate that optical methods are poised to advance our understanding of the molecular processes that govern biology.
